Description |
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. It is an intergovernmental organisation and was founded in 1986.
It is an intergovernmental organisation based in Darmstadt, Germany, with 30 Member States.
The data and products from EUMETSAT's satellites are vital to weather forecasting and make a significant contribution to the monitoring of the environment and climate change.
The EU has entrusted EUMETSAT with exploiting the four Sentinel missions of the Copernicus space component dedicated to the monitoring of atmosphere, ocean and climate on its behalf.
EUMETSAT carries out these tasks in cooperation with ESA and already exploits the Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 marine missions and of 2025 will operate Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5.
It has established cooperation with Earth observation satellite operators in Europe, China, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States. |
