The Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) is a multidisciplinary research center at Arizona State University (ASU), located within the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, a facility that coordinates ASU's initiatives addressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental sustainability, and ecosystem conservation. Although headquartered in Arizona, GDCS operates globally, with laboratories and stations in strategic locations such as Hawaii, to conduct direct studies on the planet's most vulnerable and remote ecosystems.
GDCS's core mission is to transform science into action: the center does not simply generate knowledge, but aims to produce tools and data that can guide effective decisions for environmental conservation and management. The center's scientists combine cutting-edge technologies—such as satellite remote sensing, aircraft equipped with lidar and hyperspectral sensors, and artificial intelligence models—with field data to map and monitor terrestrial and marine habitats, with a focus on the most vulnerable, such as coral reefs. |
