| Description |
EMC-BUILT is a global raster dataset that estimates how much land is occupied by built-up areas in 2022, providing a continuous value (in square meters) for each pixel (up to 10 m resolution) rather than a simple urban/non-urban classification. It is based on Sentinel-2 imagery processed into temporal composites and enriched with spectral indices, combined with building footprint data (OpenStreetMap, Microsoft, Google) used for training.
The product is generated using deep learning models capable of estimating building density at the sub-pixel level. In addition to total built-up, it includes a non-residential component and a greenness indicator. Overall, it offers a more precise and continuous representation of global built-up areas compared to traditional datasets.
