The Digital Terrain Model 5-meter grid-based (MDT05) is the official digital terrain model of Spain, created and managed by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) as part of the National Plan of Aerial Orthophotography (PNOA). This dataset represents the morphology of Spain's terrain in high detail, describing the elevation of bare terrain, i.e., terrain devoid of vegetation, buildings, or other surface structures. Each 5 × 5 meter grid cell contains an elevation value relative to mean sea level, calculated using high-precision geodetic surveys and models.
MDT05 was obtained by processing aerial LIDAR data acquired as part of the national PNOA program, integrated with photogrammetric and topographic measurements. The LIDAR points are classified to distinguish bare terrain from buildings, vegetation, and other structures, enabling the generation of a continuous and accurate elevation model of the entire Spanish land surface.
