The “Land Cover 2023” dataset by ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) represents one of the main national information bases on land cover in Italy. Its goal is to provide an updated, consistent, and harmonized representation of the Italian territory, describing what physically covers the Earth’s surface.
From a technical perspective, the dataset is based on high-resolution spatial data (up to 10 meters) and uses a standardized thematic classification aligned with the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) nomenclature and the criteria of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS). This ensures compatibility with other European products and allows integration into multi-scale analyses. The data sources include satellite imagery, orthophotos, and other national databases, all integrated and validated by ISPRA to ensure coherence and accuracy. The information is distributed in both raster format (GeoTIFF) and vector format, making it easily usable in GIS systems and territorial applications. From a temporal perspective, the dataset refers to the year 2023, but it is part of a multi-year time series that enables the assessment of land use and land cover changes over time. ISPRA periodically updates the product based on the availability of new national data and Copernicus services, thereby building a stable and increasingly detailed informational framework over time.
