Data details

Name Snow Cover Extent (SCE) 500m Europe
Note Snow cover extent is mapped daily in near-real time for continental Europe with a geometric resolution of 500m x 500m per pixel, based on optical satellite data from Level 1B calibrated radiances of Terra MODIS (Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, Collection 6). Main elements of this data set: Snow classification is applied on top-of-atmosphere reflectance of visible and mid-infrared bands, and brightness temperatures of thermal infrared bands to get the daily fractional snow cover extent per pixel. A canopy correction is applied to provide snow cover extent on the ground in forested areas, clouds, water bodies, polar night and missing data pixels are flagged

Snow Coverage Fully Snow-cover can compromise the quality of InSAR results by increasing the noise of time series. The SCE 500m product for Europe provides needed information about the extent of seasonal and permanent snow cover in higher latitudes and mountaneous regions. This helps to filter out images with extensive snow cover allowing for a reliable InSAR coverage with reduced noise for production. July 20, 2022, 8:30 a.m. Oct. 4, 2022, 9:41 a.m.
