Data details

Name ETOPO1
Note ETOPO1 is a dataset that was released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2009. It’s a 1 arc-minute global digital elevation model (DEM) of the Earth’s surface that includes both land topography and ocean bathymetry. An arc-minute is equal to one sixtieth of a degree which results in a grid cell resolution of about 1.8 km. The horizontal and vertical accuracy of topographic and bathymetric features in the ETOPO1 is dependent upon the data sets used to determine corresponding DEM cell values. Thus far, only a qualitative assessment of ETOPO1 has been performed. A quantitative evaluation by comparing ETOPO1 with select source data sets and international nautical charts will be performed in the future.

Requirements

Requirement Level of compliace Note Information costs Handling costs Created on Last modified on
Digital Elevation Model None This is a free global data set. Mostly ideal for coastal an oceanic information. ETOPO1 provides complete global topographic and bathymetric coverage between -90° to +90° in latitude and -180° to +180° in longitude. However, its resolution on land is too broad to fullfil the requirements. Therfore, non compliant. Oct. 11, 2019, 2:28 p.m. Feb. 24, 2020, 3:32 p.m.
